On 1 st July, we were privileged to be asked to attend the unveiling of the new World War One Memorial Wall in Darwen Cemetery along with members of the armed forces, Scouts, Guides and local dignitaries. It was a glorious day, hot and sunny. We listened to the service with interest and when it was time for the wall to be unveiled, Lord Shuttleworth made a speech of dedication and laid a wreath. The choir then sang “O Valiant Hearts” accompanied by Balderstone Brass Band. This was followed by the Last Post and two minutes silence.
BBC Northwest were filming and their report was shown on both news slots later that day. Later, refreshments were provided in the Rose Garden. The wall is very impressive and was made possible by the work of Friends of Darwen Cemetery and the people who have helped them to make their vision become a reality.
Many thanks to Roy for his photos of the event.
