'Three Loud Knocks' at the Library Theatre

January 27, 2018

On Thursday, 25th January, the choir was invited to assist with a scratch performance of 'Three Loud Knocks' by the Beggars Belief Collective who are bidding for funding to further their current project.

The play was in separate parts, concentrating on local people and events from the past, the first item being Kathleen Ferrier, then a longer piece about the terrible flood in Darwen in 1848 in which a large number of people were drowned - this was a tragic event and it was a very emotional experience to hear the details, choir members helped here with the sound effects, the names of all the victims were read out;  another part was about Valderee (Tommy Thompson) who lived in Darwen for many years, an old soldier, who was a local character running a rag and bone business in the town, at the end of this section the choir sang 'The Happy Wanderer' which of course has the word 'Valderee' in the chorus.

We were treated to pizza following the show - thank you very much for your hospitality, it was very welcome.

Guy Hargreaves sent the following text last night and Mike read it out to the choir:

"Dear Mike, Joyce & The Magnificent Walk This Way Choir. Thank you ALL for your wonderful contribution last night at the Library Theatre. You really transformed the evening for us and for the audience. We are very grateful for your generosity & time. We look forward to coming to be an audience to one of your performances. Best wishes & thanks again, Guy, Nicky & Marjan"
