Mike Cotter

Mike goes back to his band roots as a learner with the Eccles Borough Band, in the 1950’s, and then to the Walkden Band as a youngster on solo euphonium, from where he moved to the World Famous CWS Manchester Band in the wonderful years of the 60s/70s under the legendary Alex Mortimer. The CWS band travelled extensively, playing in most of the prestigious venues throughout the UK and overseas, including The Royal Albert Hall in London at many events including The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on many occasions.

Since his change from player to Musical Director, Mike has conducted Brass Bands throughout the UK and abroad, culminating  in many concert and contest successes along the way. His very first band as MD was Darwen British Legion Band, who won the North West Area contest on his conducting debut in 1969, following it up with a 2nd prize at the London National Finals in the same year. Since those events long ago Mike has conducted many bands including Fodens, Leyland Motors, CWS Glasgow, Sun Life (Stanshawe), Longridge, Flowers, Camborne, St Austell, St Dennis, Walkden, BMP (Europe) Goodshaw to name but a few. He has also played and conducted on numerous occasions in the Royal Albert Hall in London along with most of the other famous venues in the UK, as well as tours in Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, France and of more recent years conducted on numerous occasions on The Isle of Man.

Mike and a group of walkers have recently formed the Walk This Way Choir in May 2016 being a complete change of musical direction. The choir was initially started from members within the Walk This Way walking group, of which Mike is a very active member, and have now got members within the choir from the local community. He looks forward to this exciting and enjoyable challenge with The Walk This Way Choir.
